howard county reads 2013
Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys has been chosen
as the 2013 Howard County Reads book!
It’s 1950, and as the French Quarter of New Orleans simmers with secrets, 17-year-old Josie Moraine is silently stirring a pot of her own. Known among locals as the daughter of a brothel prostitute, Josie wants more out of life than the Big Easy has to offer. She devises a plan get out, but a mysterious death in the Quarter leaves Josie tangled in an investigation that will challenge her allegiance to her mother, her conscience, and Willie Woodley, the brusque madam on Conti Street.
Josie is caught between the dream of an elite college and a clandestine underworld. New Orleans lures her in her quest for truth, dangling temptation at every turn, and escalating to the ultimate test.
If you loved Between Shades of Grey, by Sepetys, Out of the Easy is a must-read.

About Howard County Reads
To cultivate a love of reading and to promote a sense of community, the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library (KHCPL) and the Greentown Public Library are working together again to create “HOWARD COUNTY READS 2013”.
Each year KHCPL and the Greentown Public Library work together to sponsor Howard County Reads. Members of the public nominate their favorite books. A committee of librarians and community volunteers evaluates each title and narrows the list to the top 15 books that are well-written, character-driven, not too long, interesting for a wide variety of readers (from high school students to senior citizens) and available in paperback. Then the committee chooses one title from the top 15 to be named the Howard County Reads book for the year.
In 1998, the Washington Center for the Book introduced the concept of “One Book” projects across the U.S.A. and around the world. Since 2004, thousands of people have participated in Howard County Reads, the annual community-wide reading program sponsored by the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library and Greentown Public Library.

At the close of nominations, a committee consisting of community members and library employees will narrow down the selections. They will be looking for books that are well-written, character-driven, not too long, interesting for a wide range of readers (from high school students to senior citizens), and be available in paperback.
